Botswana and its tourism model…
Sometimes it’s difficult to understand why the prices of safaris in different places vary so much. Botswana is one of the more expensive safari destinations and often people question why.
The Botswana tourism model is a ”high price, low impact” one due to the delicate and pristine environment of its wildlife areas. Strict management of land and the number of ”beds” allowed in various areas, along with the limited access with light aircraft can make a safari reasonably costly.
However, it really does offer an incredible safari experience. Game viewing is exclusive and you really feel submersed in all that Africa has to offer. It’s often referred to as the ”cream” of the safari destinations and for good reason – it’s wild, beautiful, pristine and has an abundance of wildlife species to be seen.
The luxury lodges within areas such as the Okavango Delta, the Linyanti Region, the Central Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans areas all have their unique selling points. It’s sometimes hard to work out what the differences are. However often location determines a lot of the pricing factor (and not always the ”star-rating” of the property). Camps and lodges within wildlife-productive private concessions generally come at a higher price bracket than those in game reserves or public access areas.
Most safari camps and lodges are accessed by light aircraft only – many are not accessible by road. This of course adds to the cost of the safari. However, flying over the pristine wilderness of the Okavango Delta is truly a treat in itself!
