Tanzania safari activities

Tanzania is a safari destination that won’t disappoint. It is incredibly diverse – from the red soiled ground with a very healthy elephant population of Tarangire National Park, to the enormous size of Lake Manyara and its tree-climbing lions, to the short grass plains of the Serengeti which is home to the wildebeest migration, to the granite koptjies (hills) of the central Serengeti – each place is unique and wonderful.

Whilst some areas such as Ngorongoro Crater can get busy with vehicles, the game viewing opportunities throughout Tanzania are truly amazing. Game drives produce wonderful sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wildebeest (in their thousands if you’re lucky), zebra, gazelles…the list goes on.

Adding another dimension to normal game drives are different activities such as walking, mountain bike riding, swimming in waterfalls, canoeing, tree-top canopy walkway, village walk – these elements awaken the senses and offer a truer understanding of the magic of safari.

Consider a 3-day hike in the Serengeti – walking between pre set-up camps, traversing along river beds, gentle rolling hills small grassland plains surrounded by sparse acacia forests. Big granite outcrops called kopjes give the area a great feel. You’re with a professional qualified guide and you only carry a small daypack – and you’re walking in protected zones where few others are allowed…ending each day in a lovely comfortable camp with a scrumptious meal, a cold drink, dinner under the stars and stories around the camp fire.

Ngorongoro Crater is of course famous for game drives on the crater floor – but there is an opportunity to hike around the rim of the crater, through Masaai cattle grazing grounds, through thick forest vegetation and along the crater where you can see the enormity of the crater area. A fly camp is set up at the end of the walk – small dome tents with mattresses – and again finishing with a well-deserved delicious meal under the stars.

These elements bring you close to nature and can truly enhance your African experience.
