Grootbos Nature Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa
In May 2017 I had the privilege of spending a few nights in Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, which is located near Hermanus on the Cape Peninsular (approx. 2.5 hours from Cape Town) of South Africa.
There was something that had always drawn me to wanting to visit Grootbos, I somehow knew that I was going to love it. And having spent a few days in this amazing area, I do absolutely love it!
There are two luxury lodges within the reserve – Garden Lodge and Forest Lodge – each with their own charm. I stayed at Forest Lodge which was breathtaking. The views from the panoramic glass windows were incredible, viewing right down to the ocean.
Grootbos is a piece of true wilderness, with 2500 hectares that are nestled between mountains, forest and sea and offers such a great variety of things to do. One of the most amazing things for me was learning about the plant life in this area famed for Fynbos – over 800 species of flora with an extraordinary number of unique species found only in this reserve.
In addition to the wonderful Botanical 4×4 tour, other activities include whale watching (seasonal), horseriding, walks & hikes, bird watching, coastal cave tour and marine safari. Just enjoying the views and hospitality is an activity in itself!
